Baked Apple Dumplings

Steps

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut the butter into the flour with a knife. While mixing, gradually add the milk and knead all the ingredients by hand into a soft dough.

On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the dough into a 3 mm thick rectangle. Use a pastry wheel to cut the dough into squares with 12 cm sides.

Melt the butter in a small pot. Mix the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl. Wash the apples and cut them into slices. Remove the stems, cores, and seeds. Place 3 or 4 apple slices on each square of dough, sprinkle with 2 teaspoons of the sugar mixture, and drizzle with butter. Moisten the edges of the dough with water. Shape the dough into bundles and press the edges together firmly.

Grease a shallow baking dish and place the dumplings about 2.5 cm apart. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Prepare the syrup: in a bowl, mix the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, hot water, and butter. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Pour the syrup over the dumplings.

Bake the dumplings in the preheated oven for 35 to 45 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the baked dumplings to a serving plate and serve warm. Offer whipped cream or ice cream on the side.
