Baked Beans with Bacon
Baked beans are most often used as a side dish for grilled meals, but they can also be served as a standalone dish. Preparing homemade baked beans is very simple, but it is not the fastest process, as the beans need to be soaked for several hours, then cooked, and finally baked in the oven to create a nice crust on top. In a meatless version, you can omit the bacon.

Ingredients
-
500 g Beans, grains
-
2 piece Spices, bay (leaves)
-
2 piece Onion, raw
-
120 ml Oil, vegetable oil, canola
-
1 spoon Spices, paprika
-
pieces Salt, table
-
70 g Meat, pork, smoked bacon
Steps
-
Drain the soaked beans, transfer them to a larger pot, and cover with cold water. Place on the stove and wait for the water to boil.
-
Drain the beans again and cover them with cold water, ensuring the water level is at least three fingers above the beans. Add bay leaves and cook the beans for 1 hour or until the beans soften. Salt the beans when they are almost fully cooked.
-
Peel the onion and slice it. Heat oil in a pan and sauté the sliced onion for about 15 minutes until it softens completely. Add a little water if needed. Season the sautéed onion with salt and mix it with ground paprika.
-
Drain the cooked beans, reserving the cooking liquid. Mix the beans with the sautéed onion and the bacon, which has been sliced into pieces or cubes. Add enough of the reserved liquid to create a juicy mixture.
-
Transfer the mixture to a greased ovenproof dish and bake in the oven preheated to 180°C (350°F) for about 60 minutes. The baked beans should be thick and have a crust on the surface. Let the dish rest for a while before serving.

Advice
Instead of mixing the bacon into the beans, you can also slice it and arrange it on top of the bean mixture before placing the dish in the oven.
