Steps

Place the rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse it under cold running water until the water runs clear. Drain the rinsed rice thoroughly, transfer it to a thick-bottomed pot, and cover it with cold water. Season with salt.

Place the pot on the heat and bring the contents to a boil. As soon as it boils, cover the pot and reduce the heat so the liquid simmers gently. Cook the rice covered until it absorbs all the liquid and becomes tender.

Fluff the cooked rice with a fork to loosen it, then serve.

Advice
For side dishes, we recommend using long-grain rice. Short-grain rice often becomes mushy and overcooked. If you only use water to cook the rice, be sure to add salt, and optionally spices, to enhance the flavor. Cloves, star anise, cardamom seeds, and a bit of curry work well for a beautiful golden color. Cook the rice on low heat so the grains slowly absorb the moisture.
