Ingredients
Filling
-
337 g Date, fresh or dried
-
250 ml Water
-
75 g Sugar, brown
-
1 spoon Juice, lemon
-
337 g Oat bran, raw
-
337 g Flour, Whole wheat
-
0.75 teaspoons Baking powder
-
0.25 teaspoons Salt, table
-
225 g Sugar, brown
-
170 g Butter, unsalted
Steps
-
Pit the dates and chop them finely. Cut the butter into smaller cubes. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. In a large bowl, mix the oats, flour, salt, sugar, and baking soda. Add the butter pieces and use your hands to rub the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Spread about two-thirds of the mixture evenly into a square baking dish, reserving the rest.
-
Next, prepare the filling. Place a small saucepan on the stove and add the dates, water, and sugar. Heat over moderate heat until it comes to a boil. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens. Stir in the lemon juice and remove the saucepan from the heat. Spread the filling over the base layer in the baking dish, then cover with the remaining crumb mixture. Place the dish in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes.
-
Once the dough is baked, let it cool in the dish, then cut it into squares. Arrange the date squares on a serving platter and serve.
