Ingredients
Decoration
-
pieces Sugar, white
-
pieces Butter, unsalted
-
5 pieces Egg, fresh
-
150 g Sugar, white
-
1 bag Sugar, white
-
100 ml Oil, vegetable oil, canola
-
250 ml Alcohol, Coffee liqueur
-
200 g Wheat flour, white, multi-purpose
-
160 g Koruzni škrob
-
2 teaspoons Baking powder
Sladkorni preliv
-
100 g Powdered sugar
-
2 spoons Water
Steps
-
Sift the flour and starch into a bowl. Add baking powder and mix the ingredients well. Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius. Grease and flour the šarkelj mold (remove any excess flour).
-
In a large bowl, beat the eggs and mix them with both types of sugar using an electric mixer set to the highest speed until frothy. Add the oil and egg liqueur.
-
Sift half of the dry ingredient mixture into the egg mixture. Reduce the mixer speed to the lowest setting and mix well to form a uniform batter. Repeat the same process to incorporate the remaining half of the dry ingredients.
-
Pour the batter into the mold and spread it evenly, smoothing the top. Bake the šarkelj in the preheated oven for 60 minutes. It is done when the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
-
Let the baked šarkelj cool in the mold for 10 minutes, then invert it onto a wire rack and let it cool completely.
-
Once the šarkelj has cooled, prepare the sugar glaze. In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar and cold water with a hand whisk until you get a thick, smooth mixture without lumps. Pour the sugar glaze over the cooled šarkelj. Decorate the dessert with candied flowers or sweet decorations, serve on a nice plate, and enjoy.

Instead of water, you can use lemon juice or rum for the sugar glaze. Egg liqueur can be bought or made at home.
