Millefeuille
Millefeuille, or thousand leaves, is one of the best Italian desserts. The basic version is made with cream, but it can also be prepared with chocolate chips or fruit; for example, with bananas, strawberries, oranges, or some other fruit.

Ingredients
-
400 g Dough, puff
-
4 pieces Egg, egg yolk, fresh
-
1 bag Sugar, white
-
100 g Sugar, white
-
40 g Flour, Wheat, bread flour
-
0.5 l Milk, whole milk
Steps
-
Turn on the oven and set it to 190 degrees Celsius. Roll out the thawed pastry thinly on a floured work surface and cut it into four equal sheets. Prick the pastry evenly with a fork before baking to prevent it from puffing up unevenly during baking. Lightly score a checkerboard pattern into one sheet with a knife (this will make it easier to cut later). Line a low baking tray with parchment paper.
-
Place two sheets of pastry together on the baking tray and bake in the preheated oven. Bake for about 10 minutes until the pastry sheets turn golden.
-
In a bowl, beat the egg yolks, sugar, and vanilla sugar very well. Sift the flour into the bowl, then gradually add the milk in a thin stream while mixing. Keep stirring with a hand whisk to prevent lumps from forming.
-
Place the bowl over moderate heat. Stir the mixture constantly while cooking until the cream thickens, which takes about 2 minutes. Remove the bowl from the heat and let the cream cool.
-
Spread one-third of the cream on the first pastry sheet and cover it with the second sheet. Repeat the process two more times, with the top layer being the pastry sheet that has the checkerboard pattern. Finally, dust the dessert with powdered sugar.
-
Cut the dessert into squares and arrange them on plates. Serve.

Advice
If desired, the dessert can be decorated with strawberry halves and chocolate shavings. The puff pastry is easiest to thaw by leaving it packaged in the refrigerator overnight. If this is not possible, place the puff pastry sheets on a plate side by side and let them thaw at room temperature for 30–60 minutes.
