Peel the onion and garlic. Coarsely grate the onion and finely chop the garlic. Place the ground meat in a large bowl. Add the spices, grated zest, beaten egg, onion, and garlic. Mix the ingredients well with clean hands to evenly season the meat. With wet hands, shape the mixture into approximately 20 walnut-sized balls.

Place a large pan on the stove and heat the oil. Add the meatballs and cook them over moderate heat for 12 to 15 minutes. Turn them occasionally to brown them evenly on all sides.

Serve the cooked meatballs on plates. They pair excellently with couscous and tomato sauce.
