2 piece Dough, puff

375 ml Sweet cream

60 g Butter, unsalted

150 g Sugar, white

1 pod Vanilla, extract, natural

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Roll out both pieces of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into a 20 x 30 cm rectangle. Lightly score a checkerboard pattern into the pastry that will be placed on top of the slices (this will make it easier to cut the pastry into pieces later). Place each piece on its own baking tray, cover with baking paper, weigh down with another baking tray, and bake in the preheated oven for 35 minutes until golden brown. Let the baked pastry cool.

Place a saucepan with milk, cream, butter, and sugar on the stove. Split the vanilla pod lengthwise and scrape out the seeds with the tip of a knife, adding both the seeds and the pod to the saucepan. Heat the mixture slowly while stirring until all the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes hot but does not boil.

In a small bowl, mix water and cornstarch until smooth. Gradually stir this mixture into the hot milk mixture, then add the egg yolks. Cook the cream over moderate heat, stirring constantly, for another 6 minutes until it thickens.

Remove the cream from the heat and pour it into a bowl (strain it if desired). Cover it with plastic wrap and let it cool to room temperature.

In a baking tray lined with baking paper, first place the unscored piece of baked pastry and spread the cooled cream on top. Place the scored piece of baked pastry on top of the cream, then refrigerate the dessert for 4 hours (or longer) to allow the cream to cool and set.

Remove the cooled dessert from the baking tray using the baking paper. Dust the top with powdered sugar, cut into slices, and serve.
